Green Pastures
2016 - 2017
In partnership with the Edmonton Arts Council, Green Pastures involved my collaboration with two newcomer families in Edmonton - The Molinez family from the Philippines and the Gonzalez-Gomez family from Mexico. Green Pastures explores through documentary photography, the settlement process for new immigrant families in Edmonton over a six month period. At the start of the project, each family was provided with an easy to use digital camera and invited to documents aspects of their daily life, leading to intimate photographs that emphasize their humanity and the relatability of their experience. The photographs in this project simultaneously reveal the challenges newcomer families face when settling into life in a new country, and oppose the marginalizing stereotype of the immigrant as an opportunist and social drain in community.
